Many years back, when outdoor lighting was on, one would switch a switch and leave it at that. You can now use your phone to control brightness when lying in bed. The most surprising fact was the speed at which intelligent lighting is integrated into everyday routines. You no longer think about it as tech and begin to make it a part of your daily life. Walk outside—lights follow. Get out of the house–all goes off by itself. No second-guessing.

It has also got the security aspect, which is more practical than dramatic. Motion sensors that activate the lights immediately can keep off undesired visitors. But even better than that, they save you embarrassing situations such as stumbling to find the key in the dark. It is a modest improvement that puts the stress silently down.

The customization aspect is addictive, however. Warm sounds to make the evenings warm. Warmer, brighter lights when you are cleaning up the yard or play with friends. There are also systems that allow you to schedule the various scenes to various days. Once I had mine programmed to fade a little when it was lightly raining–no need of it, but it was very nice.

Installation is not always as complex as one might imagine. Most of the systems are plug and play, particularly solar powered. The rest may require some bit of wiring, not extreme should you have ever worked on some basic home projects. And when it is finished you don’t see the hardware again.

Apps have a little learning curve. Not massive, but just large enough to stop you initially when you set timetables or link equipment. Once that, it is second nature. You touch, readjust, finished.

The extent to which you want to be in control is one of the things to consider. Other individuals embrace the idea of automation fully-automated everything, voice-activated, planned out to the minute. Some others go with a light configuration. Even a few intelligent bulbs and motion sensors can already have a tremendous impact.

Energy consumption is likely to decline, as well. The nature of LED-based systems is efficient and lights are not left unattended at night accidentally. It is one of those upgrades that save money without necessarily making a lot of noise.

With the appropriate lighting, outdoor spaces become different. The patio turns out to be small enough to be used at night. Pathways in the garden are not accidental. Even a simple front yard is given a slight raise.

And then the surprise comes–you begin to spend more time out. Not that you intended to, but because the room is comfortable. It is likely the best indicator that the upgrade was successful.
